Our Customer's Restoration Experience in Her Own Words...

“As I was entering my front door, I noticed something very wrong with the corner of the door. It looked like something had burrowed a hole into my wood doorframe. Immediately I called my pest control company to take a look. They told me it was termites and there was termite damage. The damage was pretty bad. The termites had eaten most of the wood underneath the paint, so when you touched the paint, it crumbled.

The pest control company treated for termites, but I was still left with the damage, and this was not going to be an easy fix. The wooden doorframe is arched and goes from floor to ceiling and the door and side panels are glass.

So why did I call Commercial Cleaning and Restoration, my go-to carpet cleaning company? I knew they were experienced with restoration and remodeling projects so they would have trained carpenters, window glass technicians, painters, and a project manager to coordinate with. I called and the first thing they did was come out to give me an estimate for the repair.

What I liked most is, the project manager and I coordinated the repair with the pest control company. The pest control company felt it would be best to treat the replacement wood before it was painted. So calendar in hand, we had Commercial Cleaning and Restoration come out and replace the wood. After they finished the repairs, the pest control company treated the replacement wood and the next day Commercial Cleaning and Restoration finished the job with a new coat of paint.

There were concerns about the process because it was a front door and they had to remove the glass. I don’t like having an opening for bugs, wild animals, or thieves to enter the home at night. Commercial Cleaning and Restoration reassured me that would not happen, and they followed through on their promise.

They did not have to repair the entire doorframe because the termite damage was centralized to the left corner to about halfway up the left doorframe. We tried to match the paint, but it was impossible because the paint was about 17 years old, so they painted the entire doorway. I know Commercial Cleaning and Restoration says “Like New Again” but the repair they did made it better than what it was before. Now I say when there is home repair to do – Call your carpet cleaning company first!”

What You Need to Know About Termite Damage Repair?

Termites can do a lot of damage to your home, sometimes costing thousands of dollars in repairs that are not typically covered in a standard insurance policy. If you find damage from termites in your home, you should first call your pest control company for termite treatment. Taking this step will prevent costly repairs in the future.

Termites are great at hiding and going undetected. They may enter a structure from below ground and chew away for many years without being caught in the act. But eventually, they will be found out when the part of the building they are feasting on starts to disintegrate or give way.

Signs of Termites and Termite Damage

Evidence of termites and termite damage can include one or more of the signs listed below:

  • Swarms or groups of termites flying away
  • Piles of tiny termite wings at the bottom of window or door frames
  • Wood that sounds hollow
  • Paint or wallpaper with damage underneath
  • Walls or ceilings bubbling
  • What looks like water damage, but isn’t
  • Wooden structures with tiny maze-like tunnels through them

Any of the signs listed above can mean there has been a termite problem for some time now. The termite colony is happily growing and leaving destruction in their path as they go.

Is Termite Damage Repairable?

After your home is free of termites and risks of future infestation, the existing damage can be repaired by a professional restoration company like Commercial Cleaning and Restoration.

There are two ways to repair the termite damage: 1) Remove the damaged wood and replace it, or 2) Brace damaged wood with new wood. In our client’s case, it was best to remove the damaged wood and replace it.

Should You Treat for Termites BEFORE or AFTER Restoration Efforts?

The answer is both! It is critical to treat the termites and get rid of them completely before attempting repairs. Your pest control company will ensure that your property is free of termites before the repair is scheduled.

As in our customer’s repair project, the termite damage was replaced with new wood but the replacement wood had not been treated for termites. Her pest control company came out a second time and treated the new wood before the wood was painted. Having the termites treated before and after protected her repair investment.
